Teaching first grade may look easy, but there's much more to it than reading stories. Carmen Gomes knows that, better than anyone. Kids are just starting to grow into themselves, they're starting to develop. It's a crucial time, and it's a fun time.
Carmen helps keep the atmosphere light. "They are this bundle of energy. When they come in, they're so different than at the end of the year. They learn how to read, they learn how to get along with others. Especially out on the playground because it's such a big difference for them."
But first grade is also just about kids, being kids! "You can play in the library, and you can play with the Lego's and all that stuff."
[singing]
"A little louder!"
You'll always hear a pretty song in Miss Gomes' class. To the casual observer, they seem like downtime, like playtime, but that's really not the case. The songs teach valuable lessons. "It's fun for the kids. And a lot of them, they'll remember the songs and they'll remember the verbs and they'll remember the parts that they say!"
"Yay!"
So we recognize Carmen Gomes, her kids love her, and they let her know it. She's our Educator of the Week.
And Miss Gomes has been teaching at Cole for 12 years now. She says her greatest thrill is when her former kids come back to visit her, when they're in High School.
And if you'd like to nominate someone to be our educator of the week, it's easy! Just go to our website, KSEE24.com. Then, click on community, then submission. Tell us why your choice should be educator of the week!
Every week, the winning teacher and her classroom will receive a $124 gift certificate from GW School Supply. They'll also get their names engraved on a brick on the 'Teacher and Friends of Education Honor Wall', at Fresno State's Kremen School of Education.
