Low calorie items on menus may be what's fueling restaurant sales. A study of 21 fast food and sit-down restaurant chains found low calorie food and drink sales rose two-and-a-half percent between 2006 and 2011 while high calorie item sales fell over four-percent.
In fact, restaurants that increased their low calorie options significantly boosted their sales while those with fewer diet entrees saw their profits drop.
Researchers say these results may make restaurant chains less apprehensive about upcoming laws requiring them to post calorie information on menu boards.
