Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission’s (EOC) is pleased to announce that it’s Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) program is expanding to two new sites in Fresno. WIC will be holding two special grand openings at their newest locations on Thursday, September 16, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. The new sites are located on the northwest corner of Ashlan and West at 1426 W. Ashlan Avenue, and on the northwest corner of Kings Canyon and Willow at 4995 E. Kings Canyon Road.

“We are excited to be expanding our services across Fresno County with the opening of our two new WIC sites,” says Linda Shelton, WIC Program Director. “We know that transportation is an issue for many of our current and potential WIC clients, and we hope our newest locations are more convenient and easily accessible to those in the surrounding areas.”

WIC provides nutrition education, nutrient-rich supplemental food, and health and social service referrals to pregnant mothers, new mothers (breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding), and infants and children up to 5 years of age and younger. This program has been successful in improving the health and reducing health costs of pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children. To qualify, participants must be “nutritionally at risk” and must meet certain financial requirements. Fresno County EOC’s WIC Program currently serves 35,500 participants, disburses about $2,184,000 worth of nutritious foods annually, and is funded through the United States Department of Agriculture.
