As parents, we are our child's first teacher. It's an important role and could make a difference in our child's future success.

Experts say the first eight years of a child's life set the stage for learning later in life. A child unable to read at grade level in third grade is at greater risk of dropping out of school.

There are a number of free programs available to help. Reading and Beyond in Fresno offers after school tutoring and enrichment programs in low income neighborhoods. The Reach Out And Read program offers free books to children at every well-child doctor's visit.

It's hoped programs like these will make the difference in keeping kids and their families engaged in school.
