On the same day a pandemic is declared, three more probable cases of swine flu surface in the Valley.
In the past week two probable cases of H1N1 flu were announced in Fresno County, both involving students at local high schools.
Thursday, officials with the Fresno County Health Department confirmed a third probable case involving a toddler. No further details were given about the child or the severity of the case.
Also on Thursday, two probable cases were announced in Merced County.
Despite today's pandemic declaration, the centers for disease control and prevention said it has been treating the outbreak as a pandemic since May.
Flu medicine has been sent out to states and money has been poured into a possible vaccination program.
Dr. Edward Moreno, of the Fresno County Health Department, said his staff is assessing how they've responded to this outbreak and making preparations for the upcoming flu season.
Moreno stresses that despite a general decline in flu activity during the summer, people should still be taking every precaution to keep from getting sick.
