I drink several sodas a day and I am anything but overweight. I am 5'8 and weight about 138 to 140 pounds. What it comes down to is personal accountability. If you make a pig of yourself then your going to be fat. Its like watching someone go get a extra large value meal at McDonalds then get a diet soda.
