Frequently Asked Questions
- Isn't all laser vision correction the same?
- No. Many of the discount LASIK centers want you to believe that LASIK should be purchased like a commodity and that surgeon experience, lasers, diagnostic technology and follow-up care don't matter. Laser vision correction will affect the way you see for the rest of your life. You should make your decision to have laser vision carefully, not quickly. We encourage you to visit other laser centers for a second opinion prior to deciding on surgery. Our website has an abundance of information about our surgeons, our laser technology, our advanced diagnostic technology and what you should expect during the entire process. We provide you with all of this information because we feel the more you know about us, the more confident you will feel about choosing us as your laser vision correction provider. We also encourage you to attend one of our free educational seminars to learn more about our practice. A calendar of our educational seminar dates can be found on our website.
- What is a cataract?
- A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Most cataracts are related to aging. Cataracts are very common in older people. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. A cataract can occur in either or both eyes, but it cannot spread from one eye to the other.
- Are there any new treatments for macular degeneration?
- Macular degeneration is a disease of the macula, an area of the retina at the back of the eye that is responsible for fine detail vision. Vision loss usually occurs gradually and typically affects both eyes at different rates. Even with a loss of central vision, however, color vision and peripheral vision may remain clear. In the early stages of macular degeneration, regular eye check ups, attention to diet, in-home monitoring of vision and possibly nutritional supplements may be all that is recommended. There is no proven effective treatment for dry macular degeneration. For wet macular degeneration, laser or injections into the eye of medications designed to stop or slow the growth of leaking abnormal blood vessels are options. The treatments are designed to stop leaking blood vessels but may or may not improve vision. Early detection and treatment are the best chance in preserving or improving central vision
- Will my insurance cover ophthalmic plastic surgery (blepharoplasty)?
- It depends on the actual condition of the eye. Often insurance will cover most of the cost. You can schedule a consultation with Dr. Waldrop by calling (559) 256-8490, where he will determine if your surgery will be covered by your insurance or not.
- What insurance plans do you accept and is Medicare included?
- Treatment of many eye conditions is covered by insurance, including Medicare. If you have questions about what is covered by your private healthcare insurance, contact your plan provider, or provide us with a copy of your insurance card and we'll check for you. We accept most major medical insurance plans. You can call us at 559-486-2000 with questions. If you have questions about your Medicare coverage, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to speak to a Medicare Customer Representative. You can also go to www.medicare.gov to find out more about Medicare coverage. Our staff is also available to help you determine if your eye care is covered by Medicare.
