A 12-year-old girl has been charged with murder after a man was shot dead in what police say was a random carjacking in North Carolina.

Johnny Danilo Villatoro, 35, was killed in the incident on Friday night, according to thedurhamnews.com.

Police allege three teenagers including the 12-year-old girl, another 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, the local news website name as Justino Navarette Maya, asked the Durham man for a ride in his SUV before they carjacked him at their destination and shot him dead.

Police say the 12-year-old from Raleigh accidentally shot herself in the stomach and leg while inside the car.

According to detectives, the trio stopped Villatoro on Avondale Drive in Durham and shot him once he had taken them to residential Firth Street.

Wral.com reported that the police then found the stolen car near an apartment building where they also found the 12-year-old, who is being treated in hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

She was charged with murder alongside the two other suspects.
