The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is saddened to announce its much loved male reticulated giraffe passed away yesterday morning. The 15-year old giraffe, known as “Gamba”, started to show a decline in health in the last two weeks.
According to Zookeepers, Gamba had recently began showing a disinterest in food and had vomited on several occasions. Our Zoo Veterinarian team had been running tests to find the cause of him symptoms.
“Gamba was a favorite and much loved part of Fresno Chaffee Zoo, both by our community and staff. We are saddened at his passing and will miss him greatly,” stated Scott Barton, CEO/Zoo Director.
Gamba was born here at Fresno Chaffee Zoo in December of 1997. Although Gamba was born here in Fresno, his mother belonged to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. Gamba was on loan to us until January 2006 when he became permanent resident of Fresno Chaffee Zoo after a generous donation from the Brookfield Zoo.
