Harmony Royer had a plan. She's studying Business Administration at Fresno City College. She has one semester left and Fresno State was the next step. "That was the plan and now I have no clue what I'm gonna do, no idea...makes me kinda sad."
The CSU system is trying to reduce enrollment because it lost $750 million in funding this year. To make up for it, only 10 out of 23 campuses will be accepting students and Fresno State isn't one of them.
CSU Spokesperson Mike Uhlenkamp said, "Obviously we don't want to turn away students, our mission is access for students and when funding decreases every year, we're forced to make decisions like this."
To make matters worse, those ten campuses will only be accepting a few hundred transfer students and admission is only guaranteed to students who have earned an Associates Degree for Transfer.
Frances Lippmann at Fresno City College said, "The CSU system is shrinking and students really have to be on point and be focused and know what their plan is, plan early."
Alexis Felix had it all mapped out, or at least he thought he did. He had his heart set on Fresno State in 2013 but that isn't going to happen. "I might still have a shot but it'll be out of the city...not anywhere close to Fresno and this is where I've lived all my life," Felix said.
Troubles are far from over. If Governor Brown's tax initiative doesn't pass in November the CSU system could lose another $250 million. And that could cause problems in the Fall of 2013.
