The California Highway Patrol is asking neighbors to turn in car registration cheaters. It says the state is losing out on millions of dollars because drivers who move to California are still driving around with out-of-state license plates.
The CHP doesn't get funding from speeding tickets or any citations for that matter. Most of the agency's funding comes from car registration fees. The fees also go toward the maintenance of the roads and emergency programs.
“It's 20 days once an individual sets up a residence, or starts working in California. Beyond that point you start to be in violation of vehicle code,” said CHP Officer Sean Duncan.
The CHP is asking citizens to turn in car registration cheaters. It has a website called "CHEATERS" which means Californians Help Eliminate All The Evasive Registration Scofflaws. On the site, people can enter an out of state car's information. The highway patrol will then track down the driver of that car.
Last year alone, the CHEATERS website helped bring in about $750,000 in registration fees. The fine for not registering a car in California is about $400.
