The first thing we need to clear up is that the money for this new logo campaign came from donations, and has no impact on the school's budget.
But this new branding effort does have one university icon particularly concerned...
In it's first century of existence, California State University-Fresno, has been known by many names, but a recent effort to change it's logo for the 21st century, is leaving the school's mascot fearing for his very existence. We asked Timeout why he was afraid...
"What was your reaction when you found out they might be doing this?"
Timeout can only throw his hands in the air...
The logo reads "Fresno State."
It even says "Discovery... Diversity... Distinction."
But where is Timeout?
The way he found out this was happening was even more shameful.
Timeout nods "yes."
But university president Dr. John Welty contends there have been over 100 different representations of the school, and it was time for something more authentic.
"it will build a strong identity for us and allow us to communicate with a consistent voice about who are at Fresno State."
While the school's official name is California State University-Fresno, the logo will now reflect what its always been called: "Fresno State."
School officials say we might even see changes to the cement signage at Shaw and Maple.
But what about Timeout?
Pete Mehas, Fresno State Alum: "Everybody gets nervous. In fact, you recall when Fresno State had some changes in the style of the mascot."
But don't remind Timeout...
The university did find a couple of ways to appease the beloved mascot.
At least his paw print is on the logo...
Selena Farnesi, ASI President: "We just gave him a couple of dog treats and called it good to go."
Another thing we should clear up is that Fresno State's athletic uniforms will keep the logos they currently have. So, no big changes to the football helmets, or anything like that.
The new logo was selected from over 50 variations which were tested in focus groups.
