The woman struck and killed by a train in central Fresno Wednesday afternoon has been identified.

Police say Virginia Palomino, 53, and a man were walking on the train tracks near Van Ness and Shields at about 4:00 when they were hit by the BNSF freight train. The woman died at the scene, the man was taken to CRMC and is listed in serious condition.

Fresno PD Lt. Mike Doyle said, "This has happened before where individuals were walking on the train {tracks} do get caught into a certain narrow area and they believe there is clearance. But there is equipment from the train that does stick out, and it probably took them by surprise."

Officials say the train was moving at about 60 miles per hour when it hit the pair.
