An overnight fire in south Fresno has caused $1 million in damage to school buses. It happened at the First Student bus yard near Jensen and East just before 3:30 a.m., Sunday. Sixteen buses were destroyed and several others were damaged. First student uses the buses to take Fresno Unified special needs students to school. Firefighters say fighting the blaze wasn't easy.
“Those buses had a pretty high fuel load. And consider all the petroleum based products inside the bus, so there was a lot of fuel. And the way the buses were parked made accessing those buses very difficult,” explained Fresno Fire Department spokesman Koby Johns.
Fresno Unified officials are assuring service to special needs students will not be interrupted. Students return from winter break, next week.
Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire.
