Looking at Tardar Sauce the cat, ‘cute’ and cuddly’ are not the first words that come to mind, but that did not stop the grumpy kitty from rising to Internet stardom and unleashing the latest meme craze.
The grouchy cat became an instant hit on social media sites after her owner’s brother uploaded a picture of the sourpuss on Facebook and Reddit.
Within the first 48 hours, Tardar Sauce, also known as Tard, was upvoted more than 25,300 times on Reddit.
In response to the original post, other users created Photoshopped parodies of the seemingly crabby feline, and the pictures were viewed more than a million times on Imgur.
On September 25, a video was posted online showing Tabatha Bundesen’s brother, Bryan, trying to play with her cat.
However, the severe-looking pet was having none of it, looking away from the pesky human scratching her belly, nipping at his fingers and impassively licking her paws.
Since the clip hit YouTube, more than 950,000 viewed Tard’s cantankerous antics, apparently finding her flat face with its bulging eyes and protruding lower jaw endlessly fascinating.
Two other brief videos starring the annoyed-looking animal also found a wide audience online.
Some Reddit users got creative with the stern-looking critter, captioning a picture of Tard with statements from the cat’s point of view.
Among the most notable examples are: ‘I had fun once. It was awful’; ‘Just put me down’
However, like with many online sensations, the truth behind the Grumpy Cat phenomenon is that Tardar Sauce is actually not that grumpy in real life - it’s just her face.
