A difficult day for holiday travelers across valley roadways.
As if the number of vehicles wasn't enough to slow everyone, you also had fog, and a number of collisions, some of them fatal.
One of which happened just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening on Friant Road near the town of Friant. CHP says the driver lost control of his pickup and went off the road. The truck rolled, killing the driver, and sending the passenger to the hospital with moderate injuries.
Another roll-over collision stopped the morning holiday traffic near Coalinga. It happened around 10:00 a.m. at I-5, near highway 145.
The crash was originally reported as a 100-car pile up. But investigators say only 5 cars were involved.
One person suffered major injuries. Some minor injuries were also reported. The cause of the collision is under investigation. Traffic was stopped for about an hour.
Another collision happened at Chestnut and American in the early morning fog. Witnesses say a car ran a stop sign and collided with a motor home. Several people were taken from the scene to the hospital. No word on their injuries.
Fog may have also played a role in a fatal accident at Highway 152 and Road 6, at about 8:00 a.m.
Investigators say a man in a Saturn tried to turn left in front of an oncoming truck. The truck slammed into the car, killing the driver. The driver of the truck and his passenger are said to be okay.
And in northern California. CHP says three bay area residents, including two small children, were killed on highway 50 near Placerville Saturday night. The driver of a minivan, from Placerville, was also killed, after colliding with the Prius, carrying the other three victims. Officers say a deer crossing the road may have caused this accident.
