Friday afternoon a Madera County Sheriff's deputy spotted a pick-up belonging to a wanted suspect parked at a home near Road 415. The officer tried to make contact with the driver, but he jumped into his vehicle and drove towards the deputy. The officer opened fire, and the driver, later identified as 41-year-old George Walter Rosenberg of Mariposa, fled towards the area of Wells Road and Trabuco Mountain Road.
Deputies say Rosenberg was wanted on a felony no bail narcotics warrant out of Madera County.
After searching the area for several hours, deputies found Rosenberg's pick-up in a barn and began to search the area. He was found dead in area over-looking the barn in a manner described as "armed & lying in wait" for approaching officers. Madera County Sheriff's officials later noted that Rosenberg positioned himself in a way that allowed him to see officers approaching the barn, but remain completely hidden.
It appears he succumbed to his injuries after being shot by the deputy he tried to run over.
Coarsegold Elementary school was briefly on lock-down as deputies searched along Road 415 for Rosenberg.
