(Sacramento Bee) An unidentified man died Monday at Yosemite National Park after plunging off the face of Half Dome, marking the 15th death in the park this year.
Park spokesman Scott Gediman said the death likely occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, when climbers reported seeing a body fall off the sheer face of the iconic peak.
It was too late in the day to mount a search. So this morning, a helicopter was dispatched to search the area, and located the body on a talus slope at the base of Half Dome's sheer face. Rangers then hiked into the area and found the body at about 2:00 p.m.
Gediman described the victim only as a white male, and declined to provide further details, pending an ongoing investigation.
