A man who spend $60 thousand dollars fighting to have a pet dog returned to him after he claimed his ex-girlfriend stole the dog, has lost his fight for custody.
Craig Dershowitz and his ex-girlfriend Sarah Brega are in the middle of a heated custody battle over Knuckles, a pug-beagle mix. Dershowitz, from New York, has gone through his life savings, and into debt, after his ex-girlfriend took their pup to California after they broke up.
Dershowitz hired two private investigators to find the pup and and has now been forced to take on costly legal fees. But during a hearing in San Pedro, Los Angeles, on Wednesday, a judge ruled that Brega can temporarily maintain custody of the dog.
But all may not be lost, another hearing will take place in New York next month to decide which state has jurisdiction in the bitter battle.
Dershowitz, 34, said he asked Brega to look after the half pug, half beagle while he found a new place to stay following their break-up. Once he had settled, he agreed to share custody of the dog with his ex-girlfriend.
‘At one switch point, she asked me to promise, promise, promise I would bring him back and not “steal him away forever”’, Mr Dershowitz said. ‘I was dumbfounded by what she meant but I agreed. Little did I know what she was planning.
‘Next thing I know, a week before I thought we were meeting, she was on the road to California with my baby boy.’
The man then started an online campaign to raise $20,000 so he can continue the legal battle against his wealthy ex-girlfriend and win custody of the dog he considers his 'son'.
‘She’s got a really wealthy family that’s supporting her – I don’t,’ he said. ‘She has her attorneys filing frivolous motion after frivolous motion because she knows every time my attorneys respond to it, it’s another $5,000.
