An Ohio man shot his of 45 years in her hospital bed as she recovered from a life-threatening illness in the intensive care unit, police say.
Barbara Wise, 65, survived the gunshot wound and is in critical condition.
Her husband, John Wise, 66, was arrested on attempted murder charges.
Officials say Wise went to visit his wife at the Akron General Medical Center during normal vising hours on Saturday night.
He was standing at her bedside when he suddenly pulled out a handgun and shot her about 9pm.
A doctor who heard the gunshot ran into the room and heroically negotiated with Wise, his gun still in his hand, for two minutes while security officers arrived, hospital spokesman Jim Gosky told Mail Online.
The guards, who were unarmed, were able to subdue Wise and take him into custody until police responded.
No one else was injured.
'One could speculate that it could have been much worse,' Mr Gosky said.
'It appears that he was there just to inflict violence on his wife and no one else, but we don’t know that.'
Mrs Wise had been admitted to the hospital a few day earlier with a life-threatening medical condition, authorities say.
