(Press Release) The Merced Police Department received a call Tuesday morning from Amtrak Police that they were chasing a man who just stole a passenger’s luggage. Dispatchers advised patrol officers of the theft and gave a description of the suspect’s vehicle.
Officers saw the suspect’s vehicle near 11th and K Streets. The suspect tried to flee by droving through McNamara Park. There were people in the park and they had to run from the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect then crashed into the fence of the Merced Police Department's South Station. He ran from the vehicle but was apprehended in the parking lot of the police station.
He was identified as Ronnie Chestnut and the vehicle he was driving was reported stolen from the area of 16th and V Streets. Chestnut was arrested for auto theft and booked into the Merced County Sheriff’s Department Jail.
