A convicted rapist was escaping a long prison sentence. Now his family could join him behind bars.
Last December, Spencer Scarber was convicted of a violent rape. Three days before his trial ended, he disappeared.
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office tracked him to Mexico. On Thursday, police in Acapulco had Spencer Scarber in custody.
He was sent back north and was denied bail. Then, deputies made three more arrests.
Spencer's parents, Kyle and Gail Scarber, were booked on multiple felonies, including conspiracy and being accessories. Spencer's sister Crystal Reynoso is facing similar charges of helping her brother escape to Mexico.
Kyle Scarber is a high-ranking officer with the California Highway Patrol. Sheriff Margaret Mims says she personally called the CHP commissioner to tell him the news.
All three of Spencer Scarber's relatives posted over $100,000 bail. The case is being handled by the state attorney general's office.
