Fresno County has something in common with a woman the Superior Court sent to prison. They're both liable for the death of a 10-year-old boy.

Seth Ireland was beaten to death by his mother's boyfriend four years ago. Friday, a jury in the civil trial decided Fresno County should have done more to prevent the attack.

$8.5 million dollars will be split between two of Seth's family members. $5 million going to Seth's father, Joseph Hudson. $3.5 million will go to Seth's half brother.

Child Protective Services was told that Seth Ireland was being abused. Police and CPS investigated, but they were unable to find enough cause to intervene.

Joseph Hudson hopes Friday's decision will force Fresno County to act more swiftly when children are in danger. Their 65% share in the penalty has the attention of County officials.

The other 35% is assessed to Seth's mother and her boyfriend. LeBaron Vaughn is serving 15 years to life for murder. Rena Ireland is finishing a six year sentence for her part in failing to stop the murder of her son.
