(NBC Miami) George Zimmerman will be charged with second-degree murder and is in custody, special prosecutor Angela Corey announced Wednesday.

”Today we filed an information charging George Zimmerman with murder in the second degree," Corey said at a news conference in Jacksonville, referring to a formal charging document.

She said Zimmerman is in custody in Florida, but would not say where exactly. Corey said an "alias capias," or warrant, has been filed for his arrest.

Corey said he will have the right to appear before a magistrate in Seminole County within 24 hours of his arrest, “and thus formal prosecution will begin."

The state attorney said she and her investigating team did not come to the decision lightly.
