Valley Soldier Killed in Afghanistan Attack

A Central Valley man is among three soldiers killed in Afghanistan when their unit came under attack on Saturday.

Spc. Thomas J. Mayberry, 21, from Springville was killed from an IED explosion from enemy forces in the Wardak province of Afghanistan.

Mayberry was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team from Fort Bliss, Texas.

Mayberry’s was a decorated soldier and had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with a Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.

Mayberry was posthumously promoted to the rank of Specialist. He is survived by his spouse.

The other two soldiers killed in the attack were Sgt. 1st Class Clark A. Corkey Jr, from Oxnard, California and Spc. Ryan M. Lumley of Lakeland, Floriday.
