A change of command
There was a change of command on Thursday at the Fresno U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion. Lt. Col. Richard Ellis turned over his command to Lt. Col. Richard Rivera. Lt. Col. Ellis told KSEE 24 News that recruitment in the Central Valley is rising, and is not just being driven by the economy. He said there is a long tradition of military service in Central Valley families that leads many young men to join the Army. More

Brush fire destroys home in North Fresno
A brush fire near the San Joaquin River behind the area of Fruit and Alluvial has destroyed one home and severely damaged a second home. The fire broke out late Thursday afternoon. Eight other homes in the area were evacuated. Neighbors say the home that was destroyed belonged to an elderly couple who were moving in to a convalescent home and had the home up for sale. By nightfall, firefighters had the blaze under control. All working firefighters from Fresno, along with Clovis firefighters and Cal Fire came out to battle the fire. It was the largest call out in Fresno County in 20 years. No one was injured.

Governor announces water 'loan' to Central Valley Farms
Late Thursday afternoon, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced he has a water 'loan' of 100 thousand acre feet from the state to the Central Valley Project to provide irrigation water to Central Valley farms. The order will borrow water from the federal government to provide some relief to drought-stricken farm land. Those at the heart of the battle say this water 'loan' is far short of a long-term solution to the problem. More

State officials raid Vartanian's auto dealership
There are more legal woes for Fresno businessman Kirk Vartanian. On Thursday morning, state DMV investigators and Fresno police raided his Auto Gallery at Shaw and Blackstone. The luxury auto dealership closed its doors about two weeks ago. A spokesman on scene said investigators were looking for evidence in 7 complaints filed involving theft and embezzlement totaling around $1 million. More

Vartanian facing five felony counts
Wednesday Update: Kirk Vartanian pleaded not guilty to all felony counts in a Fresno County courtroom. Vartanian's attorney is flying to Las Vegas to discuss the charges against him there with the Clark County District Attorney, hoping to have the hold on Vartanian removed so Vartanian can be released from jail.

She helped a police officer pull the driver of one of the cars out of the burning wreckage. More

Vartanian still held on Las Vegas charges
Fresno businessman Kirk Vartanian remains in jail, being held for an outstanding warrant out of Clark County in Nevada. Vartanian was arrested early Saturday morning, after he was accused of beating a woman in her Fresno home. He was also held for the Nevada charges, which involved felony counts of check fraud and theft for writing bad checks to two Las Vegas casinos. The charges could scuttle his plans to open a nightclub and restaurants at the Granite Park development. More

Interior Secretary promises water help
U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar told a packed room at Fresno State that he will take several important steps to being relief to the parched western areas of the Central Valley. Salazar said he plans to appoint Deputy Interior Secretary David J. Hayes to head up an effort to find solutions to the drought and environmental restrictions that have choked off water supplies. He also wants to use $160 million in federal funds to build new infrastructure to bring water to the area. More

Businessman Kirk Vartanian arrested
Fresno police arrested businessman Kirk Vartanian on Saturday morning. Police say Vartanian was arrested on charges of domestic abuse, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, and violation of a restraining order. Police did not identify the alleged victim in the case. He is currently being held in jail. Police say there is also a warrant out for Vartanian out of Las Vegas involving felony theft related to a casino. Vartanian has been in the news lately for attempting to revive the faltering Granite Park business development by opening up a nightclub and saying he wants to open at least two restaurants there. Avenal soldier remembered
Friends and family gathered at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Avenal to remember Sgt. Joshua Soto. He was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq on June 16th. Soto was on his third tour of duty in Iraq, and had already earned a Purple Heart when he was shot during his second tour of duty. More

Heat wave this weekend
Temperatures are expected to hit the triple digits this weekend, and possibly break records on Sunday with highs above 105. Area cities are preparing to open cooling centers and public pools will be jammed.
Safety officials remind people to stay hydrated, with the best thing to drink being plain water. People who cool their homes only with fans are warned that in triple digit temperatures that may not be enough to stay safely cool. Missing teen found at Mammoth Pool
A 16-year-old San Diego girl who was missing at Mammoth Pool has been found, safe and sound, by Madera County sheriff's deputies. The girl, Bryanna Barnes, said she got disoriented after she went behind some trees to change her clothes and got lost. Life sentence in "PlayStation" murder
A judge on Friday, sentenced Jonquel Brooks to a life sentence for murder and attempted murder. Brooks was convicted in the so-called PlayStation murder. In May 2007, Brooks shot and killed Brant Daniels in an apartment complex neat the Fresno State campus, in an argument over an allegedly stolen PlayStation video console. Two other men were shot and wounded. Brooks, who was a Fresno State student at the time, claimed he shot the men in self defense after they barged into his apartment accusing him of stealing the console. More

Michael Jackson dies
Singer and pop icon Michael Jackson died on Thursday, after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital when he suffered a heart attack. Paramedics were called to his Los Angeles home Thursday afternoon, where they reportedly found Jackson unconscious and not breathing. Jackson would have turned 51 in August. After a rocky time over the past several years, he was preparing for a comeback tour in England this summer. More

Fatal wreck in Fresno County
A 4-car pileup on eastbound Jensen near Armstrong left two people dead and others injured. CHP says a vehicle was traveling the wrong way down Jensen when it slammed into 3 other cars. Two passengers in the first car that was hit died. The driver of the vehicle going the wrong way was arrested. Police believe he was driving under the influence of alcohol. More

Sheriff's department takes big hit in Fresno County budget
The Fresno County Board of Supervisors approved a budget for the next fiscal year that included deep cuts in public safety and law enforcement agencies. Commissioners are trying to close an estimated $41 million gap in the budget. The sheriff's department had $10 million sliced from its budget, and Sheriff Margaret Mims says it will mean laying off dozens of employees. More

Serial killer sentenced to death
A Madera County judge upheld the death sentence for serial killer Jose Guerrero. Guerrero was found guilty of killing three women from 1995 to 1998 and attempting to kill a fourth woman. That woman, Evelyn Estrada, who survived an attack by Guerrero, was in the courtroom on Tuesday when the sentenced was handed down. More

A riot forced a temporary lockdown at the Corcoran State Prison Sunday afternoon, and left 11 inmates injured. Prison officials say it appears the confrontation was gang related and may have been planned. Prison guards used pepper spray and rubber bullets to quell the disturbance. The City of Clovis opened its newest park on Saturday. The Dry Creek Park, located at Clovis and Alluvial, connects to the Clovis Botanical Gardens. The park features a climbing wall and covered playground. It was built with a grant from First Five of Fresno County, but the city says it will not be able to do much maintenance on the park due to the current budget shortfall. More

Many of the students we talked with said they are concerned about the future of farming in California because of short water supplies and the economy, but most said they are optimistic they will have a future in farming. The Edge opens for one night
The Edge nightclub, businessman Kirk Vartanian's club that is replacing Cabo Wabo at Granite Park, opened on Friday night. The club opened about two-and-a-half hours past it's scheduled 6 pm opening, and Vartanian said it would close down again for two weeks after tonight.
Celebrity Kim Kardashian, billed as the star attraction for the club opening, showed up around 9:30 pm. More

Two arrested after Merced officer shot at
Two teenagers in Merced are under arrest after an off-duty Merced police officer was shot at early Friday morning. Merced police and SWAT members surrounded an apartment complex most of the morning looking for the weapon used in the shooting. More

Gov, Schwarzenegger declares water emergency
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger visited drought-stricken Mendota on Fir day, meeting with officials and touring a farm that remains unplanted because of a lack of water. While there, he announced he was signing an Executive Order proclaiming a state emergency. The order frees up around $4 million for emergency services and food banks in the area, as well as waving the one-week waiting period to receive unemployment benefits.
