Convoy of Hope Heads to Southwest Fresno
The international non-profit organization Convoy of Hope brings their larger than life community services project to Edison Computech on Saturday. They'll be handing out 160,000 lbs. of food, in addition to providing health services, haircuts, a carnival, and employment services. Body Of Fallen Soldier Returns Home
The body of a fallen soldier from Merced returned home from Iraq Friday.
Servicemen carried the casket that held the body of Private First-Class Lukas Hopper.
Hopper was killed in Iraq when his vehicle rolled over last week.
The 20 year old had been in Iraq for more than a year, and was just nine days away from coming home before the accident.
A public viewing will be held at Stratford Evans Funeral Home in Merced from 4 to 7 Friday night, and from 8am to 10am Saturday morning.
A funeral will follow Saturday's viewing.
Hopper will be buried at Cathy's Valley Cemetery. More

City Council Approves Residential Metered Water Rates
Fresno City Council voted to approve the implementation of metered water rates for Fresno residents. The meters will be installed beginning in January 2010. Public Utilities officials say if your water usage is at a constant pace, you won't see much difference, but that you will see a seasonal fluctuation. The city gave the public one last opportunity to protest the metered rates. More

Accused Killer Makes Unorthodox Plea Deal
An accused killer has accepted a plea deal, based on a somewhat unorthodox request.
30 year old Kenneth Wilson is accused of shooting to death 41 year old Julio Barajas during a car jacking back in February of 2008.
Wilson took a deal today in Fresno County Court, agreeing to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole, but only if he was allowed hug his sisters in jail for at least 45 seconds each.
If not, his lawyer says the deal is off the table.
The Judge agreed to the terms, but added that Jail Officials will make the final decision.
A decision is expected to be made next week.

Suspect in Officer Involved Shooting Arrested
After hours of searching for a man involved in an officer involved shooting, the suspect is now behind bars.
22 year old Dedrick Mitchell was found at around 1am in an apartment in the 2000 block of South Chance.
Police say that is the area where Mitchell tried to rob a food vendor before police intervened.
Mitchell was struck by the officer’s bullets multiple times, and had to be treated at an area hospital after the arrest.
He is now in the Fresno County Jail. More

Major Nadal Malik Hasan, is still alive, and under arrest at a nearby hosptial.

Be a Santa to a Senior
The "Be a Santa to a Senior" program is underway. You'll see decorated trees at 22 Walgreens locations in Fresno and Madera Counties. The program, sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care, allows the public to choose a name, buy a gift, then drop it in a bin (wrapped or unwrapped). Those gifts are then given to local seniors who may otherwise not get a gift this holiday season. The program runs through December 12th. Local law enforcement agencies, including the Madera County Sheriff's Department and the Sanger Police Department will be assisting in the delivery of gifts. The third officer involved shooting in one week comes just hours after a new Fresno police auditor was introduced. The latest shooting happened after an attempted robbery of a food vendor. With officers just a block away at the time of the incident, a chase ensued, with one officer firing on the suspect after he pulled knife. Police are still looking for the suspect. More

Teen Confesses to Killing Mendota Toddler
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department says the teen accused of killing a Mendota toddler has confessed to the crime.
14 year old Raul Castro made his first court appearance Wednesday.
He’s accused of molesting, and sodomizing 4 year old Alex Mercado, before murdering him, and stuffing his body in a dryer.
The toddler’s body was found Saturday.
According to court documents, the teen confessed to Fresno County Sheriff’s Detectives Saturday.
Today’s hearing was continued until next Tuesday. More

Huge Turnout for H1N1 Clinic
The rush is on to get vaccinated from the H1N1 flu virus.
Thousands lined up Wednesday afternoon for a H1N1 clinic at the Manchester Mall in central Fresno.
The crowd was only able to get the H1N1 vaccine, due to massive demand, and a shortage of the seasonal flue vaccine.

Orange Cove Mayor's Son Arrested
The son of Orange Cove Mayor, Victor Lopez is behind bars tonight.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department arrested 43 year old Victor Lopez Jr. on charges of possessing narcotics.
He was arrested Wednesday morning, following a two month long identity theft investigation.
Detectives say they found narcotics at the home of Lopez Jr., located in the 2500 block of East Summer Avenue, in Orange Cove.
Also seized was property, which detectives believe may have been stolen or embezzled from the city. More

14 year old Raul Renato Castro has been charged with the first degree murder of 4 year old Alex Mercado of Mendota. Friends of Castro are speaking out as the memorial in front of little Alex's home continues to grow. Castro will be arraigned Tuesday morning in Fresno County Superior Court facing, in addition to the murder charge, special circumstances which allege murder during a child molestation, sodomy, kidnapping, and murder of a witness to prevent testimony.

Another No Show for Suspected Child Molester
Another medical emergency has kept a suspected child molester away from court.
81 year old Harry Baker missed another arraignment in a Fresno County Court today.
His attorney says the former Madera County Supervisors was taken to the hospital this morning on advice of his doctor.
Baker has been suffering from bronchitis and Pneumonia, causing him to miss his third scheduled court appearance.
He’s accused of molesting a 13 year old girl in a Fresno hotel room 2 years ago. More

Teen Charged in Murder of 4 Year Old
The Fresno County District Attorney has filed charges against the teen accused of killing 4 year old Alex Mercado.
14 year old Raul Castro has been charged as an adult with first degree murder.
Castro also faces separate felony charges of kidnapping, sodomy, and child molestation.
Investigators say Castro drowned the four year old Friday, and then hid his body in a dryer.
Castro will be arraigned in Fresno County Superior Court Wednesday morning.

Family Mourns Death of 9 Year Old
A Fresno Family continues to grieve the loss of their 9 year old son.
Cage Castillo died Sunday night after being hit with a car, while riding his bike near Ashlan and Marks in Northwest Fresno.
The person driving the car left the scene.
Tuesday night, Cage’s family returned to the scene of the crime to hold a memorial and collect donations for his funeral.
Donations can also be made to any Educational Employees Credit Union.
Authorities say they still haven’t found the driver who hit Cage.
The suspect’s vehicle is being described only as a silver Sedan that’s missing a bumper. More

Donations Needed at Community Food Bank
Community Food Bank supplies food to thousands of families across the Central Valley. Recently, the non-profit organization was able to receive state funding to distribute food in communities hit hard by high unemployment as a result of the drought. That program has come to an end, but the need continues. KSEE 24's Pamela Prado spends the morning live at Community Food Bank with more on the situation.
The food bank has a goal of distributing around 10,000 holiday meal boxes for Thanksgiving, although the need is even greater. Donations of money (the food bank can stretch $1 into $8 worth of food) and volunteers are needed. If you can help, call (559) 237-FOOD (3663) or click here:

Water Rate Increase for Clovis
Clovis residents will soon be digging deeper to pay for their water bill.
The City Council voted 5-0 Monday night to raise rates by at least 55% over the next two years.
Clovis hasn't raised water rates since 1991. Since then, the city's population has nearly doubled. Combined with the decrease in new construction revenues, the city has been put in a financial corner.
The water fees will see their first increase on January 1st. More

The Mendota community continues to mourn after it was announced that 4 year old Alex Mercado's cause of death was drowning. Alex's body was found in a dryer next door at a neighbor's house. The teenage boy who lives there is the only suspect in the case. More

Caught On Tape: Fight Breaks Out At CRMC
Community Regional Medical Center is reacting to a fight that broke out in the hospital last month.
A video of the fight was posted on Youtube.com.
The hospital says the incident happened on October 3rd, after four shooting victims were brought into the trauma center.
When loved ones were prevented from visiting the injured in the off-limits trauma area, the group reportedly attacked security officers.
No one was seriously injured in the brawl, and police made some arrests.

A soldier from Merced has been killed in Iraq.
Private First Class Lukas Hopper was killed in a vehicle accident while on duty in Iraq.
The 20 year old had been in Iraq for more than a year, and was only nine days from coming home.
Tonight, his family is remembering him as a loving son, and brother, who did things on his own terms.
Governor Schwarzenegger made a statement, saying, “He will be remembered for his courage and dedication as he put his life on the line to protect the freedoms of our country." More

Mother of Slain Mendota Boy Speaks
The Mother of 4 year old Alex Mercado is speaking out about her son’s death.
Mindy Mercado says she had suspicions about the 14 year old accused of killing her son, and stuffing his body in a dryer this weekend.
She also denied rumors that the 14 year old had been babysitting for the children.
A memorial fund has been set up for Alex Mercado, to help pay for funeral expenses.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department is releasing new information about the death of a 4 year old Mendota Boy.
Investigators say Alex Mendota was drowned, before his body was hidden in the dryer of a neighbor’s home.
Mercado vanished Friday afternoon, prompting a city wide search. His body was found the next day.
A 14 year old boy has been arrested, and accused of murder. His name is not being released, but Police do say he is the sole suspect.

Search Continues After Mid Air Collision Near San Diego
Rescuers still have not found any survivors from a mid air collision involving military aircraft of the coast of San Diego Thursday night.
The nine disappeared after a Marine Corps. helicopter collided mid-air with a Coast Guard Airplane last night, 15 miles east of San Clemente.
A pilot in the area reported seeing a fireball and then debris falling into the ocean.
Seven people were on the coast guard plane, and two marines were aboard the helicopter. More

11 Arrested in Prostitution Sting
A major prostitution operation puts nearly a dozen men behind bars.
The one-day sex sting was designed to stop prostitution in West Central Fresno.
The operation focused primarily on Belmont Avenue.
11 people were arrested for soliciting a prostitute.
The Fresno Police Department warns that prostitution will not be tolerated and they are putting added pressure on those who are soliciting the prostitutes by publishing their names and photos.

The Fresno County Department of Public Health says, its received over 11 thousand doses of the H1N1 vaccine.
There are 8,000 injectable doses, 3,000 nasal sprays, and 500 injectable pediatric doses available.
The department will start providing the shots and spray beginning Monday. More

Police Crack Down on Domestic Violence
Police are cracking down on domestic violence in Fresno.
A multi-agency task force arrested 43 abuse suspects in “Operation: Safe At Home” Wednesday night.
154 locations were targeted by officers from the Fresno and Clovis Police, along with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department.
Of those arrested 35 face felony charges of domestic violence.
Violent Crimes are up more than 6.5% from last year, and Fresno Police say, domestic violence is a major part of that. More
