Hmong New Years celebrations kick off

By Preston Phillips

Since the early 1980's, when the Hmong people began settling in Fresno County, a seven day Hmong New Year celebration has been taking place every year, to offer a place for the Hmong community to come together.

"About 200 years ago, most Hmong people migrated from China, Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand," said event consultant Pao Fang.

Lee Vang came all the way from Vietnam to attend this year’s celebration. She says, "We come here for friendship and we want to make a good relationship with the Hmong Community in America."

Today, many came out for great food, friendship and entertainment.

Many also came out to hear Hmong leader, retired General, Vang Pao speak.

"He's one of the prominent leaders that brought Hmong people globally to another level. Now Hmong people are known worldwide," said Fang.

Retired General, Vang Pao was arrested over the summer after allegedly plotting to overthrow the Laotian government.

But... Many people here say he's still their hero.

"General Vang Pao is a hero to every Hmong people around the world and we know that he means a lot to the Hmong community in America," said Vang.

"It's great to just come and see him. We don't ever get a chance to see him. So it's a great opportunity," said Da Vang. She’s also celebrating the Hmong New Year.

For many others, today's celebration was about meeting new people...

One of the best ways to do that... "Pov Pob"... You toss a tennis ball... Get to know someone... And if you're lucky... Walk away with a spouse.

The New Year celebration goes until January 1st.

Admission is $3.00 at the door.
