EXCLUSIVE: Fresno soldier more hopeful about being released from Mexican prison

By Geoff Roth

Army specialist Richard Torres remains in a Mexican prison in Juarez, Mexico, accused of illegally bringing weapons into Mexico. On Monday, in an exclusive prison interview with KSEE 24's Preston Phillips, Torres says he's feeling more confident about gaining his freedom after U.S. and Army officials have been working on his release.

On April 21st, Torres was driving from Fort Hood, TX to Fresno to see his mother, when he stopped in El Paso. He wanted to park his car and walk across the border to Juarez, but mistakenly got into a lane where he was forced to drive into Juarez. Once across the border, he was arrested because he had weapons in his car, guns that were legally registered to him in the U.S.

The most serious charges against Torres have been dropped, but he is still facing weapons charges. Army officials met with Mexican officials late last week and Torres says he is feeling more confident that he will soon be set free.
