Farewell to murdered federal corrections officer

By KSEE News

Hundreds showed up to say goodbye to Jose Rivera, the 22-year-old federal corrections officer who was stabbed to death at the Atwater federal prison. Services were held in Merced at St. Patrick's Church. Local and federal officials say they are still investigating the case, and no charges have been filed yet against two inmates who reportedly attacked Rivera and stabbed him to death.

Theresa Freed reports from Merced.

i have been in the bop for about 2 years i am the same age as fallen officer j. rivera and it kills me to think that lappin is only starting to consider protective vest for us, wow. but what about the other things we need like more staff, batons, and mace. i will continue to try to transfer over to cdc where they do things right, and give the proper equipment for the job. RIP my brother officer JOSE RIVERA.

Not enough officers due to Director Lappins cost saving initiative when the war started the BOP uses officer to fill in sick and vacation spots. Where did these officers come from? Posts the BOP get rid of so now there is less staff per shift all to save a little on overtime. Thanks Lappin

I think it is very sad that we in the BOP have in some ways have become expendable,we take risk every day like other law enforcement officers but we are afforded none of the respect or honor. Its sad that we have lost one of our own and cant even show our greif because the BOP is so cheap and uncaring we are not even allowed to have our badge to cover with a black cloth for jose rivera. How very low and indignant the bop has become..our seal should not be the eagle it should be as follows ($)

In our world the bad guys carry the weapons and the good guys have none. I would like to think that jose died for a goog cause but he was killed as much by the BOP as the inmates that stabbed him. The director tells the country how safe it is in here while cutting the number of officers to save money. they dont do the cops like this and they at least have weapons to defend themselfs. I hope if i ever get killed the director wont insult me by attending my service..I know that he dont care!!

what a dog and pony show! Lappin acting like he is sad-He is already thinking of the next thing to take away..All that matters to them is the all mighty dollar..we need more staff and a better pay check and a cost of living raise thats not 3 years behind inflation.. I think we and the family of jose rivera will never have the story straight. Lappin will sweep jose under the rug and start a new till the next one of us is killed. Why dont the world care about a correctional officer. Unsung Heros

Jose Rivera put his life on the line everyday guarding criminals and all that is reported is a few sentences, put a police office with skin cancer gets a full report, where is the justice in this. Why is it taking so long to investigate this crime, where are the cameras at, my tax dollars are paying for what? More crime to go untouched. Unhappy tax payer
