It's the simple pleasures in life that Harold Kelly of Fresno appreciates so much. Things like pruning the Japanese Maple in his backyard or feeding his fish. At 69, Kelly relishes every moment because the past four years have taken a toll. He's suffered four heart attacks, and prior to that, he was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Two years ago, Kelly found two lumps in his left breast. He went to the doctor and was shocked when he was diagnosed with cancer. The disease that strikes one in eight women also strikes one in 1,000 men.
In March of 2010, Harold Kelly ended up being that one man. Kelly says, "I was thinking I do remember the thought, is this really happening to me?"
What happened next is what happens to many breast cancer patients: he had a mastectomy. Now, two years later, he's cancer free.
Kelly says, "I try when I talk with anybody is encourage women to check men, their boyfriends or husbands, and for men to get checked and encourage doctors to check them."
Harold Kelly is proof, breast cancer can strike anyone. It's now his mission to speak out and save lives.
