It was also a ceremony to honor the families of these brave men and women...
Veterans Day is just less than a week away...
But to honor these men and women who've recently returned from duty overseas couldn't wait.
Many accepted the recognition with mixed feelings... knowing there's still work to be done.
James Fisk, Returning Airman: "It's a little bittersweet because the rest of my team is still over there actually in Afghanistan as I speak."
Mayor Ashley Swearengin was among the dignitaries speaking at the ceremony, offering the city's help to airmen trying to make the transition back to their home lives.
Congressman Jim Costa congratulated them on a job well done.
"We know that our nation has prevented over 90 potential attacks that were discovered that were meant to do harm here in our country."
The families of these recently returning airmen were also recognized for their sacrifice.
Col. Sam Said, 144th Fighter Wing: "If you're a mom left behind with 4 kids and your husband's deployed for 6 months or a year, who do you think has the tougher job?"
Teresa Bravo's son, Daniel, recently returned from Afghanistan, but was killed in a motorcycle accident shortly after.
Teresa accepted the honors on her son's behalf.
"I'm so proud of my son, even though he's not here with us. He's still continues to make us proud. He was proud to be in the air force and the air force was his family. It was his second family."
