From the shore, the High Sierra Regatta seems a bit chaotic.
Boats are all over the lake, and numbers are flying around...
But there's a method to the madness...
"If you've never watched a sail boat race then you see these boats milling all over the place they're actually posturing themselves for position."
Sounds simple enough, but the race is challenging.
It's 9 miles of pushing and pulling, trying to catch the wind, and navigate the course.
"It's a good challenge, it's not supposed to be easy, you gotta work hard for it."
For Janice Erdman, this race is a tribute to a relative who died.
"He normally would be here with his son doing the sailing and racing today."
This year, her son is racing in his place.
"It's very meaningful."
It's also meaningful for John Richards.
He's been sailing for 12 years, and his wife is always in the boat with him.
"Something to do as a couple, it really is special... I'm glad that my wife still enjoys sailing."
After the race, it's a 15 minute break and back to the water...
Mark Ryan wouldn't have it any other way.
"You get away from it all, get away from the city and you're just one with the wind and nature."
