A new California law could save some drivers money, but add expense to technicians. A move to improve air quality could hurt small business owners.
Cars purchased in California after 2000 have on-board emissions sensors. However, they are still subjected to the same tailpipe analysis as older vehicles.
That will change on January 1st. Drivers of newer vehicles can expect shorter wait times and cheaper costs for computer diagnostics.
But some smog technicians are upset about the new law. They say the high-end diagnostic tests will force them to buy pricey equipment.
Auto shops are also being hit with stricter regulations. Fines for infractions are increasing, and the certification process is becoming more rigorous.
