A shooting in South Fresno leaves one man dead and another in the hospital. Police say the call came in as an unknown disturbance but when units arrived, they found two crime scenes and two victims.
Shots rang out near Lotus and Rev. Chester Riggins Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. “I heard 5 or 6 shots,” says Elizabeth Haro who was in the neighborhood at the time.
Police say it was a drive-by; a car fired at a residence then more shots were fired back at the car. The gunfire left one Hispanic man in his early 20s dead in the street. “They weren’t moving, one of the vans was blocking it, but we saw the body,” recalls Haro. “We didn't see it moving, we thought he was dead. He didn’t move at all.”
Police say the car sped off but was caught just seconds later. “We were fortunate to have officers in the area and get the suspect’s car detained quickly,” says Fresno Police Lt. Anthony Martinez. Officers pulled the car over a few blocks away on Holly and East Lorena Avenue.
When police approached the car, they noticed a second victim. The passenger, a Hispanic male in his 20's had been struck by a bullet; he was taken to the hospital while police detained the driver.
“There are multiple bullet casing in the streets; we are still questioning suspects,” says Martinez. As police combed the area for weapons and other evidence neighbors stood by, they say the flashing lights are not an unusual site. “A lot happens around here,” says Haro.
The man that was shot and taken to the hospital is listed in stable but critical condition.
Police confirm this is a gang related shooting.
Fresno police are questioning the man that was detained in the car as well as the residence where one of the victims was shot and killed.
