Unqualified educators staff California classrooms. State lawmakers respond by trying to get students out of school.

A bill introduced to the state assembly would make it easier to become a teacher. Anyone with a degree in education would be credentialed without taking another year of class.

As it stands, becoming a teacher in California is a five-year-long journey. AB 5 would shorten it to four in exchange for more first-hand experience.

Budding educators would be placed with teachers in the community mid-way through their college course work. Studies show that training with accomplished educators exponentially imrproves the pupil's teaching skills.

Another recent study shows California teacher's often lack skills. About one in ten are underqualified to teach the subjects they're assigned.

AB 5 would extend the credential requirement for people majoring in anything other than education. Their college tenure would stretch from five years to six.
