A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday night to remember Phillip Dhanens.

The 18-year-old freshman died last weekend, just days into his college career.

Hundreds of students, many dressed in black, gathered in the peace garden on campus.

Although much of the evening was spent reflecting in silence, there were some speakers who shared memories or messages of comfort.

Dhanens, a Bakersfield native, died Sunday in a local hospital.

He was a newly accepted member of the Theta Chi fraternity, which is located off campus.

Police say his death came after a night of heavy drinking at the fraternity house late Friday, and into Saturday morning.

The university has suspended recognition of the Theta Chi fraternity following the tragedy.

The investigation into Dhanens' death is ongoing.
