(PC Magazine) If you've been waiting to get your hands on a .XXX domain, now is your chance. At 11:00 a.m. Eastern Tuesday, the ICM Registry will open registration for .XXX domains to the public.
The .XXX domains are available via a variety of registrars, including GoDaddy and Network Solutions. A complete list is available via buy.xxx, which the ICM Registry said is already receiving about one million visitors per day.
Domains are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and pricing will be set by individual registrars. GoDaddy, for example, is charging $99.99 for the first year, while Network Solutions is charging a $129.99 registration fee.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Web's governing body, officially approved the creation of a .XXX domain in March, paving the way for a virtual red-light district.
"While adult entertainment is enjoyable to many adults, it is not appropriate for all audiences. We created .XXX to address the unique needs of the online adult entertainment industry," Stuart Lawley, CEO of ICM Registry, said in a statement. "The public response has been overwhelming as consumers and the adult entertainment providers are excited about the benefits and infinite possibilities of .XXX."
ICM said all .XXX domains will include daily McAfee malware scanning, the only domains to include this service. All .XXX sites will also have MetaCert electronic Family Safety label for those who want to adjust their browser settings and avoid adult-themed sites.
