The National Marine Fisheries Service has issued a ruling that federal and state water projects in the Central Valley are contributing to the possible extinction of salmon, sturgeon, southern resident killer whale, and steelhead. As a result of the ruling, the federal government will impose further restrictions of water distribution to Central Valley agriculture.
The proposal would cut another 5-7 per cent of federal water allocations that have already been cut to protect the Delta smelt. The ruling was met iwth condemnation by lawmakers from the Central Valley as well as the Western Wetlands Water District. The district says it plans to file a federal lawsuit to stop the additional cutbacks.
