Get beach ready

CHICAGO -- As the summer months approach, so does the desire to look good in that swimsuit. Many Americans these days are choosing to receive cosmetic surgery in early spring in order to ready themselves for the beach.

"Spring is definitely the peak activity for liposuction. Patients know that it takes weeks and months for the swelling to resolve and plan their procedures accordingly," said AACS President, Steven Hopping, M.D., of Washington D.C.

"There is always an upswing with breast augmentation in the spring," said Angelo Cuzalina, M.D., D.D.S, an AACS Trustee from Tulsa. "It begins with college students during spring break and steadily increases through early May for women of all ages. Liposuction is also a highly sought out procedure at the beginning of April, year after year."

Additionally, the average age of women who are receiving these beach ready procedures is increasing. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery 2007 Procedural Survey, since 2002 the mean age of patients seeking the top ten most performed invasive procedures has increased by two years. The average age of a female patient receiving liposuction has increased by three years to 41, while breast augmentation has increased by two years now up to 33. "People want to look the age that they feel, especially at the beach," adds Cuzalina.

This trend does not just include women. Men are opting to get such procedures as sclerotherapy, the removal of spider veins, in order to show off their summer legs. Male sclerotherapy has increased by 226 percent since 2002, proving that men are becoming just as aware of what they look like in a swimsuit as women.

"Especially before the summer months, sclerotherapy is a popular procedure for men and women," said Dee Anna Glaser, M.D., an AACS Trustee from St. Louis. "Laser hair removal is also something people want done before the summer tan season."
