PROSTATE CANCER

By KSEE News

Prostate cancer is an extremely common cancer among men.

The older you are, the more likely you are to have it.

Locally 485 Fresno county men will be diagnosed this year -- 65 will die.

A simple screening test is available to catch it early, but the key is going to the doctor to take it.

A Fresno man is glad he did.

60-year-old Don Laines of Fresno was diagnosed with prostate cancer while he was being treated for kidney stones. The P-S-A or prostate-specific antigen blood test-- determined he had prostate cancer.

Laines is healthy now. This director of finance for Duncan Enterprises in Fresno underwent surgery in April. He's recovered and back at work. Living proof that prostate cancer can be beat if caught early.

The American Cancer Society recommends that men over 50 begin annual screening.

African American men are at higher risk. It's recommended they begin testing at age 45.

Stefani Booroojian reports.
