- On Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 6 PM at Tor Nino’s (5080 N. Blackstone Ave. in Fresno) the Law Offices of Fishman, Larsen, Goldring and Zeitler will sponsor the Festival of Hearts Extravaganza. This event will benefit Camp Taylor, a summer camp for kids and families that suffers from congenital heart disease.
Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect and the # 1 cause of death in a child’s first year of life. Every year 40,000 children in the United States are born with congenital heart disease translating into more deaths than all types of cancers combined. In fact, you may be too young to think about this yet, but February is National Heart Awareness Month, and since heart disease is the number one killer of women in this country - it's never too early to put the topic on your radar screen
Camp Taylor was founded in Central California when Taylor Gamino, a child with heart disease, wanted to go to summer camp. Kimberlie Gamino, Taylor’s mom searched throughout California and soon realized no camp was suitable for children with heart disease. Determined to make her son’s dream of attending camp possible, Kimberlie Gamino created a safe, fun place for children with heart disease, and Camp Taylor was born.
Kimberlie Gamino, founder of Camp Taylor states, “Camp Taylor is dedicated to creating a positive experience in the often short lives of children with heart disease.” She continues, “Many children have undergone several open heart surgeries or even worse yet maybe waiting for a heart transplant.”
All event proceeds go directly to Camp Taylor, Inc., a local non-profit 501c (3) organization dedicated to providing programs for children and families living with heart disease. These programs include 4 residential summer camps, financial assistance to families during hospitalization and funding local hospital gatherings for children. All Camp Taylor programs are custom designed to enrich the lives of this unique population of campers and all activities are modified based on each camper’s ability.
“We are proud to sponsor Camp Taylor, which allows young people afflicted with congenital heart disease to experience summer camp in a safe, medically supervised environment,” said William E. Chaltraw, attorney with the Law Offices of Fishman Larsen Goldring and Zeitler. He continues, “The camp’s motto says it all, ‘Kids meet…Scars blend…Wonders happen!!!’ We are proud to play a part in ensuring that those wonders will continue to happen for years to come.”
The fundraiser will include a dinner and live auction. The cost is $70 per ticket or $650 for a table of 10.
