At the World Trade Center site, moments of silence were held at 5:46 this morning pacific time, the time the first plane struck.
The names of the victims will be read aloud by family members.
At the pentagon there was a wreath-laying ceremony and remarks by defense secretary Leon Anetta and other dignitaries.
Near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where flight 93 crashed into a field, Vice President Joe Biden joined the memorial service and tribute.
