One of the Navy's newest ships embarked on its maiden deployment.
The U.S.S. Gravely is a guided missile cruiser.
It is named for Samuel Gravely, the first African-American in the U.S. Navy to command a warship.
It was commissioned in Wilmington, North Carolina in 2010.
This is its first actual deployment mission.
The Navy says the Gravely will participate in ballistic missile defense escort operations.
