Tonight will spell victory for one final contestant at the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Coarsegold's Tia Thomas is one of 45 remaining competitors heading into the semi-finals. The competition started with 288 children yesterday. The first day included a familiar mix of comical and nerve-wracking moments, as kids ranging in age from 8 to 15 tackled words like "ambuscade" and "Manhattanese."

Tia is among the returning favorites along with Matthew Evans. Both are 13 years old and both are home-schooled. The competition renews a rivalry between the two that began four years ago. They are the only five-time repeaters at this year's bee.
