Heat Safety for Your Dogs, pt. 1 - Heat Stroke

We're not the only ones suffering from the scorching temperatures. Our pets are also feeling the heat. We went to Welcome Waggers Doggie Day Care to get some tips on what to do about dogs that may be suffering from heat stroke.

Here some things to watch for regarding heat stroke and your dog...
-Body temperature is 104-110
-Intense, rapid panting
-Wide eyes
-Salivating
-Staggering
-Weakness
-Seizures
-Bloody vomit or diarrhea

How to avoid heat stroke...
-Don't walk your dog in the heat of the day
-Never leave your dog in your car
-Always leave your dog in a cool place with plenty of water
-Keep your dog fit (40% of household dogs are overweight)

Treatment for heat stroke
-Get to a veterinarian quickly
-Cool your dog down with water, NOT ICE WATER
-Make sure the water gets to its skin
-Run cool water over tongue and mouth
-Offer ice cubes for dog to lick
-Take your dogs temperature, stop the cooling at 103
