Author of Mennonite in a Little Black Dress visits KSEE Sunrise

The story "Mennonite in a Little Black Dress: A Memoir of Going Home" takes place in Fresno. This morning on KSEE Sunrise, Faith Sidlow talked with author Rhoda Janzen.

In MENNONITE, Rhoda tells the story of returning to her Mennonite home after a seriously disastrous week (her husband leaves her and she’s in a serious car accident). In the warm embrace of a religious community she long ago left behind, Rhoda comes to terms with her failed marriage; her desire, as a young woman, to leave her sheltered world behind; and the choices that both freed and entrapped her.

Fresno is the home of Rhoda’s parents, both distinguished members of the Mennonite community. Her father was once the head of the North American Mennonite Conference for Canada and the United States. Her mother has served the community as a nurse. MENNONITE is a wonderful introduction to the Mennonite community in and around Fresno. There will be a traditional Faspa potluck book party thrown in Rhoda’s honor the day after the signing. We hope non-Mennonites will share some of this excitement surrounding Rhoda and her book.

Rhoda teaches English and creative writing at Hope College in Holland, MI. She holds her PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she was the University of California Poet Laureate in 1994 and 1997. This book marks her first foray into non-fiction and is not to be missed!
