Keeping Your Immune System Balanced with Yoga during the Winter Season

This morning on KSEE Sunrise Katie Flinn and Diane Engeln of COIL Yoga explained how Yoga helps balance the immune system.

Everyone is well aware these days how stress, lack of sleep and exposure to other sick people can weaken our immune systems and make us vulnerable to illness.

There are lots of ways to stay healthy and balanced during a time of year when people typically go on overdrive and really our bodies just want to hibernate. Staying healthy doesn’t just mean getting a flu shot and then thinking you are in the clear. You have to manage all of the other areas of your life with mindfulness as well. Think about what you eat, how much you sleep and the amount of time and energy you are putting out into the world vs. into yourself. As difficult as it may seem, you will need to make the time to take good care of yourself this season.

I recommend that you try to resist the urge to maintain your same hectic schedule and make more time to take care of your mind, body and spirit. Yoga is a fantastic way to stay healthy and balanced as your social calendar fills up and deadlines pile up at work. It’s REALLY important to recognize what TYPE of Yoga practice your body needs to help keep you in balance. If you already have a hectic schedule, high stress job and work out like a fiend, you could benefit from a Restorative Yoga class. If you are more towards the lethargic side of life, a Vinyasa Flow class could be just what you need to re-energize your mind and body.

At COIL Yoga we offer all kinds of classes for everyone’s different needs. Please take the time to let your teachers know what is going on with you this holiday season so that we can recommend a practice for you that will help bring balance and peace of mind to your life these days.

This morning Diane and I will be demonstrating some easy and moderately challenging postures that will keep you balanced, healthy and strong as the holiday season approaches.
