Jury selection begins in Schuster trial
Jury selection began Monday in the case of a Clovis bio-chemist accused of killing her estranged husband and stuffing his body in a barrel of acid. As the Fresno attorneys arrived at the Van Nuys Los Angeles County courthouse, 150 potential jurors soon followed. The day started with a brief hearing regarding Larissa Schuster's confinement. Her attorney Roger Nuttall worries that since the jail where she's staying is 30 miles away, he won't be able to meet with her when he needs to. He also says she hasn't been receiving her heart and anxiety medication as prescribed. Schuster's trial is being held in Van Nuys because the judge believes it's unlikely she could receive a fair trial in Fresno. Last year her co-defendant James Fagone was tried and convicted in Fresno. The case received substantial medial attention. At the time of the Timothy Schuster's death,Larissa Schuster worked as a chemist, Fagone was her former employee. At 1:30 p.m., the dozens of potential jurors heard a statement from the judge about what their time commitment will be and the basic allegations in the case. Then they went to another room to fill out a questionnaire, with questions such as, "During the trial you will likely see photographs of the victim's remains. Would the prospect of having to view such photographs so disturb or upset you that you believe you could not serve as a juror?” Opening statements are scheduled to begin October 22.
