FBI warns of possible al-Qaida attack against LA shopping malls

By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The FBI says it has received a tip that
al-Qaida is planning to attack shopping malls in Los Angeles and
Chicago this holiday season, but the agency doesn't know whether
the tip is credible.

The memo, which was declassified Wednesday, says the terror
network "hoped to disrupt the U.S. economy and had been planning
the attack for the past two years."

The FBI says it received the tip in late September, but
emphasizes there is no credible indication that the threat is real.
FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko in Washington says the intelligence
information report was given to local authorities "out of an
abundance of caution."

The mayor and police chief planned a news conference Thursday
afternoon to talk about the report.
