Tempers flare in Johnson-Klein trial

By Bud Elliott

Tempers flared during the Stacy Johnson Klein trial Tuesday, when a commotion outside the courtroom led to a meeting with the judge behind closed doors.

The argument was over former Fresno State associate athletics director Diane Milutinovich.

After seven weeks of sometimes acrimonious testimony, emotions are running high in the wrongful termination lawsuit against Fresno State University.

Before the judge and jury arrived at the Fresno County courthouse Tuesday morning, a verbal joust between plaintiff's attorney, Dan Siegel, and defendant's attorney, Mich Marderosian, escalated into a shouting match about whether Milutinovich she should be allowed to watch the trial.

This prompted 1970's-era women’s basketball coach, Donna Pickle, to parade a sign in the hallway.

“I just in ink wrote on it, "we want Dianne". Dianne Milutinovich is a friend of mine and she would like to be here and witness the trial,” Pickle said.

Milutinovich is barred from the courtroom because she is a potential witness. And although she has already testified, she’s subject to recall.

A bailiff then tried to toss Pickle out of the courtroom.

“He was very loud. He wanted to see my sign. I showed it to him, and he said you're out. And I said why, and so it went from there,” explained Pickle.

That led to another shouting match and then a half-hour meeting in the judge's chambers.

When the trial finally got underway, two former assistant coaches testified that they saw a change in Stacy Johnson-Klein's demeanor and behavior in her second and third seasons.

Then, former assistant coach, Adrian Wiggins took the stand and told the jury that he felt Johnson-Klein had a growing problem with pain killers, and that her behavior and job performance grew increasingly bizarre.

He said he finally told his supervisors about his concerns because the player's well-being was endangered.

Wiggins is scheduled to take the stand again Wednesday.
